About Glen Eyre Halls

Glen Eyre is one of the largest halls of residence for the students of the University of Southampton. With around 2000 students in the entire complex, it contains facilities such as a bar, take-away, shop, laundry, gym, squash court and computer room.

Glen Eyre is only 10 minutes away from Highfield campus, has easy access from the M3, and is served regularly by the Unilink buses. Glen Eyre is set out rather like a village with small houses around the pond, which is very different to other halls like South Hill and Montefiore, and is a very pleasant place to live, work and play.

Reception

The Glen Eyre reception serves the entire Glen Eyre complex, which also includes Chamberlain, South Hill & Hartley Grove. It receives all the post and parcels for residents. Post is distributed twice daily to your block, except on Sunday. Parcels are kept at reception for collection - a note is delivered to your block to let you know that it a parcel has arrived for you. Take the note and your residents card to reception to pick up your parcel.

If you have any problems with your room/block, etc. please inform reception so that they can arrange for it to be fixed. There are also vending machines and a cash machine (£1.50 charge) at reception.

Gym

The Gym

Glen Eyre has its own gym for Glen and Chamberlain residents to use. It is located past reception to the left of the laundry. To use it, you need a SportRec card, and you need your Smart ID card activated for Glen Gym (this is done at the sports centre). Once activated, brush your ID card over the proximity scanner and that will unlock the door. Any problems with entry or the equipment please inform sportrec@soton.ac.uk or inform a member of the Sports section of the JCR.

The gym contains the following cardiovascular equipment:

  • Running machine,
  • Rowing machine, and
  • Cycle machine.

The gym also contains the following weight machines:

  • Lateral pulldown,
  • Shoulder press,
  • Pectoral fly, and
  • Seated tricep extension

For those keen students who want to keep fit, Glen Eyre has a squash court for use by students with a SportRec card. It is recommended to book in advance for peak times - evenings and weekends. To book, use the booking form in the lobby between the squash court and the gym. For equipment hire please contact SportRec..

Note: The DSR (Department of Sport and Recreation) may change the equipment at any time so this information may not be correct.

Laundry

To discourage students from carting their dirty laundry home for their generous mum to wash them, Glen Eyre has a large laundry room. This is situated past reception to the right of the squash and gym. All the machines are industrial size, meaning you can fit more than regular machines.

In the laundry room there are 16 washing machines and 16 tumble driers.

Cycle Storage

Cycle Storage

Because 1st year students are not allowed to bring cars to Glen Eyre, bringing your bike is a popular option for those students who feel that the 10 minute walk to campus is too long. There are lots of cycle racks around Glen Eyre, including under the Round Room, in front of Jellicoe, and by E block, where you can lock your bike up. However, this is not recommended as thieves can steal them quite easily from the racks. A much better place is the secure cycle storage located past reception to the left of the gym.

The cycle storage provides sheltered secure storage for your bike. As the capacity is limited, register early to avoid disappointment. To use the cycle storage, complete a cycle registration form included in your fresher's pack or available from the Student Union. Return this to the Uni-Link office (above SUSU shop) and you will be issued with a plastic ID tag for your bike, and your Smart ID card will be activated for 2 secure storage sites of your choice.

Once activated, to use the secure cycle storage, place your Smart ID card on the proximity scanner, and the door should unlock. Close the door behind you, lock your bike, then press the button to get out. Report any problems to unilink@soton.ac.uk

Kiyu (Q) Burger

Glen Eyre boasts its own takeaway - Kiyu (pronounced Q). Kiyu is a legend among past and present Glen Eyre residents. Many pub crawls or nights out have ended with a Kiyu burger, or for a late night meal when you can't be bothered to cook. Kiyu sells a whole variety of burgers (including vegetarian) in sizes from ¼ pounder up to a full pounder (available on special request). Kiyu is located on the corner of the Glen Bar behind D block. Friday is Kiyu's busiest night, so the queue for Q after the Cube is quite large, especially at his busiest time, 2:30am - taking up to an hour of waiting from before being served.
